IRIS KLOPPENBURG

My design concepts are a cross between reality & imagination, a venture into the unknown. I am inspired by how we define the world and how to redefine this in my designs. What is present behind reality? Textile and the interior behave as a living organism in this. As they change and grow in a particular space, it is transformed into an infinite landscape. Anyone who comes in the space influences and transforms this process and is being changed from a consumer into someone who experiences the space intensely.

My room concepts can be seen as various shapes of this living organism and the worlds in which it moves.

HOTEL ROOMS

LIVE HAND DRAWING
The cheap, ‘pre fab’ and D.I.Y. quality of the electrical cord and ditto nails that keep it in place do not make this 3D jewelry design look any less fascinating. It twirls through he room like artificial ivy, writing it’s meandering thoughts in black on the white walls, only to clash into the hipster curtains in bold electro clash color blocking.

GROWING CREATURE
Preciously petit as this room is, it is embellished with paper flowers like a little girl’s prom dress. Not the romantic rose inspired bridal couture kind but rather conceptual corsages made to look just like the careless balls of paper the designer used in her sketch phase. These embellishments are recreated in a special fireproof paper and pinned to the walls with three different colored upholstery nails giving them just a hint off the glittery girl dream they seem to refer to.

UNAWARE REALITY
Both Iris Kloppenburg’s rooms ‘Unaware Reality’ and ‘Infusion’ are fully dressed in a solid, custom made cloth with a graphic dreamscape woven in. The sober yet precise paneling in a rich and rather stiff quality fabric seems to refer to the Japanese kimono, which traditionally reflect not only the level of sophistication and wealth of the wearer but also the precise mood of the season. In much the same way ‘Unaware Reality’ echo’s your ‘floating world’ by day
